Personal Alarms for Self-Defense

Personal Alarms for Self-Defense

Posted by Ulrich Faircloth on 20th Jan 2012

Ever been in a situation where you have been stalked in the streets at night or were worried about being ambushed by someone wishing to do you harm? Have you ever thought about using a safe personal alarm for protection? Letting off some *noise* may be one of the best ways to avoid a confrontation. In this blog post we will discuss how you can keep yourself safe from danger through the use of high decibels.

One of the most underrated personal safety devices is the personal alarm. This handy tool is like having a home security system in your back-pocket. Noise generation is what makes this a great option for crime prevention.

How Do Personal Security System Alarms Work?

The personal alarm works by emitting a high-pitched sound, which can be activated by a button on the alarm or by pulling the activation pin. Once the pin is removed, the alarm will continue to sound until the pin is placed back in. This feature allows the alarm to work, even if it is taken away from you by your assailant. Losing the element of surprise, most criminals will run away.

Many alarms have dual functions, having both a panic button and a flashlight for night-time. Some—like the Keychain Alarm with Light—come in the form of a key chain, which you can link to your keys or other attachments. Others—like the Electronic Pocket Whistle—can be placed around your neck or put in a purse.

How Loud are Safe Personal Alarms and Alarm Keychains?

Most alarms range between 90-130 decibels, which can create enough of a disturbance to send an attacker packing. To give you some context, 130 decibels is the equivalent of a loud rock concert! As you can see from the chart below, anything higher than 130 decibels can cause severe damage to hearing. Sounds reaching past 85 decibels can cause hearing problems over extended periods of time.

The purpose of the personal alarm is to deter attackers. A criminal wants to draw the least amount of attention to him or herself. It’s sort of like being a lion in the wild; make too much noise and your prey will get away. The personal alarm causes that disturbance, alerting other people nearby of the situation. This is useful for women, college students and elderly persons who fear they might be attacked.

The other nice thing about it is that it can be used in a direct confrontation. If someone tried to physically assault you, you could blast the alarm into their ears to cause damage or disorient them. That would make them think twice about pursuing you. The personal alarm works best in unison with other self-defense weapons, such as pepper spray or a stun gun, as it is not designed to stop an attacker. After incapacitating your assailant with pepper spray, you could follow up with an attack via the stun gun or the alarm.
